What You’ll Learn

Our Catholic Studies for Educators Concentration will give you a strong foundation in Catholic thought, culture, and doctrine, providing you with strategies for integrating Catholicism into a classroom environment or educational program. When you earn this concentration, you will be prepared to:

  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of Catholic pedagogy.
  • Incorporate the Church’s teachings throughout all areas of the classroom, not only during religion classes.
  • Understand the history of Western education, including modern challenges.
  • Apply principles of Catholic education to issues including theories of the human person and human flourishing, diversity in educational philosophies and trends, use of technology, theories of instruction and assessment, the relationship between parochial and public education systems, etc.

The Catholic Tradition
 
Utilize the framework of Dawson’s Six Ages of the Church by examining the Catholic thought and culture in an integrated fashion across multiple disciplines (such as theology, philosophy, history, literature, and the arts) in order to construct a coherent and beautiful vision of reality that draws from the Catholic intellectual tradition and her various cultural products.

History of Western Education
 
Examine the Greek philosophical tradition, Jewish revelatory tradition, and the Christian synthesis of both, especially concerning those traditions’ reflection on the nature of the human person and excellence or virtue, which is the basis of the Western tradition. Investigates the nature and purposes of Western education, tracing its unfolding over time, including challenges by modernism and its contemporary iterations.

John Henry Newman the Educator
 
Approach both the person of John Henry Newman and his extensive writings by examining how his vision of education arises out of his work as friend, scholar, tutor, professor, and priest. By mastering the principles he discovered and promoted, students will relate this Catholic vision to their own situation within the task of education.
