An evening or online MBA/MA in Philosophy will equip you with the operational skills and philosophical foundations of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition you need to advance your career or prepare for further study.

Philosophers are in high demand in the professional world — business, law, public service — as they are able to think clearly about practical challenges as well as the deeper, ultimate questions. Their study of logic, ethics, goodness, beauty, and truth makes them top candidates for leading corporations in industries from tech to health care and beyond, as they are well-positioned to lead in everything from product design to crafting a corporation’s values and vision.

The University of Mary’s innovative dual MBA/MA in Philosophy degree will provide you with fascinating, rigorous engagement in the history of philosophy, ethics, human happiness, and reasoning. You will cultivate a philosophical habit of mind and how to apply it to the skills you will learn in your MBA coursework: management, organizational leadership, economic analysis, mission advancement, and more.

Shaped by this curriculum, you will be formed deeply in the tradition of virtue ethics and Catholic Social Teaching in accord with the Church’s Magisterium, enabling you to bear Christ forth – in the splendor of Truth – as you fulfill your vocation.

The following are examples of courses that will be offered for this program. For more information regarding the full list of courses, please contact us.

Reading, Writing, & Argumentation

Students will develop the skills necessary to reason systematically, argue persuasively, write clearly, and communicate effectively. Students will sharpen their logical reasoning by engaging in practices such as summarizing, creating, defending, and critiquing arguments; preparing abstracts; identifying and charitably interpreting ambiguities; writing explanatory and critical essays; and employing appropriate structure, style, and references.

History of Ethical Thought

How should we live? This course tells the story of our reflection on this question; it contrasts classical ethical theories, rooted in a teleological conception of the human condition, with modern and postmodern theories. Philosophers studied will include Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Hume, Kant, Mill, and Nietzsche.

Business and Catholic Social Teaching

Students will analyze workplace diversity and discrimination, workplace conditions, privacy, wages, the use of technology, environmental concerns, and corporate social responsibility. Students will integrate these business topics through meaningful reflection of faith-based readings including Rerum Novarum, Economic Justice for All (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops), and John Paul II’s Laborem Exercens.
