What You’ll Learn

The MSN to DNP Nursing Organizational Leadership program will prepare you to serve in a variety of clinical, organizational, and/or educational systems. Upon graduating with your nursing doctorate, you’ll be able to demonstrate clinical expertise, evidence-based decision making, leadership, and advanced scholarship in nursing practice. Classes will teach you to:

  • Appraise health care organizations to assess strengths and weaknesses and facilitate organization-wide improvement in health care delivery.
  • Be a leader in knowledge translation and application of evidence-based practice.
  • Use informatics and patient care technology to improve health care outcomes in clinical practice and organizational systems.
  • Influence health care policy at the local, state, and federal level to champion issues of quality, social justice, equality, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Manage cutting-edge innovations and change among interprofessional teams for purposes of advancing health care quality among patients, populations, and complex systems.

Data Driven Quality Improvement in Health Care (3 credits)

This course provides DNP students with the opportunity to develop and refine leadership decision making skills. Making informed choices within health care organizations requires clinical inquiry and utilization of not only relevant, but also accurate data. Advancing nursing and health care quality through strategy implementation and systems thinking principles that are founded on evidence-based, data driven decisions is the focus of this course.

Interprofessional Collaboration (3 credits)

Build upon current collaboration skills to develop leadership and negotiation expertise in interprofessional teams to drive positive redesign of health care delivery and systems. Tools, theories, and models for navigating through conflict resolution, effective communication, team dynamics, and motivation to achieve optimal health outcomes will be explored.

Organizational Systems Leadership Practicum (2 credits)

Refine critical leadership skills for direct and indirect care through precepted experiences that allow doctoral students to develop clinical competencies within their specific emphasis area. Integrate theory and clinical competencies to provide preventative care, health promotion, health education, health systems leadership, policy, and evidence-based care to a variety of populations. This course explores leadership competencies including change management, strategy implementation, emotional and social intelligence, influence, expertise, conflict management, decision making, team dynamics, and systems thinking.

  • Official MSN transcript (if applicable, any other transcripts with evidence of graduate nursing coursework) from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program. Master’s degree in nursing must be from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. 
    • Graduated from the University of Mary before? Then we’ll get your Mary transcript for you!
    • At most other schools, you can request transcripts by going to the National Student Clearinghouse or by contacting the registrar’s office. 
    • Have your transcripts sent to:
