Alternatives to traditional education are in demand. As part of this major movement, Montessori schools are blossoming, particularly in the Catholic world. Maria Montessori, a Catholic laywoman and educator, founded her model on a deep understanding of the very nature of children, the importance of parents as the first educators of their children, and the family as a domestic Church. Montessori education therefore forms the young within a community of love as school, family, and Church collaborate together to shaping their minds and souls in goodness, beauty, truth, and virtue. A Certificate in Catholic Montessori Education from the University of Mary will provide you with the knowledge and certification necessary to educate and lead in Catholic Montessori schools.

As part of the Master’s in Counseling, this curriculum will train you to counsel people effectively in accord with the magisterial truths of the Church regarding the human person: that we are male and female, and an integrated unity of body, mind, and spirit, intended to live in harmony with God, Nature, and one’s fellow men and women. With a particular focus on the Church’s traditional practices of cura animarum, the cure of souls, students will not only learn what the truths of Catholic anthropology are but also how to employ them in counseling to nurture authentic human flourishing and the healing of minds, hearts, and souls.

Social pathologies are a major problem in modern society, as mental illness, criminal behavior, and addiction afflict millions and their families and communities. The modern world needs healers, but the healing arts are often practiced today upon a deficient foundation. The Catholic Faith offers a solid foundation for the healing of persons and societies, as it teaches the truth about the human person: that we are male and female, and an integrated unity of body, mind, and spirit, intended to live in harmony with God, Nature, and one’s fellow women and men.

A bachelor’s degree from the University of Mary in PsychologyCriminal Justice, or Addiction Studies will form you deeply in the Church understanding of the human person so that you can bring healing to a hurting world.

Many programs in counseling are grounded in secular philosophical and anthropological perspectives, and many trained and practicing counselors desire deeper formation in the rich and integrated vision of the human person that the Catholic tradition offers, a glorious Catholic anthropology that sees the human person as male and female, as a harmonious unity of body, mind, and spirit, intended to live in communion with God, Nature, and one’s fellow women and men. Meanwhile many faithful but wounded Catholics and other Christians are seeking practitioners who can counsel them in accord with their convictions from the perspective of the Gospel. The University of Mary’s Certificate in Catholic Anthropology will provide you, as a working practitioner, with a robust and useful understanding of Catholic anthropology that will enrich and transform your practice, leading to ever deeper healing for your clients.

Priests have received excellent theological training in the Church’s seminaries in the traditional areas of systematics, Scripture, homiletics, Church history, and liturgy and sacraments. But newly ordained priests often find a large part of their early work involves working in a Catholic high school as a chaplain, and find that high school chaplaincy presents particular pastoral challenges. High school chaplains in the Diocese of Bismarck have met those challenges in an impressive way, and there has been much fruit, including record numbers of priestly and religious vocations from the Catholic high schools. The courses in this program are taught by many of these experienced priests, who will mentor and train you to form young people ever more deeply in sanctity, fidelity to Catholic teaching, and joy in the Christian life, as they discern their own vocations.

Sport remains an American passion. Yet a mentality dedicated to winning at all cost often dominates, from youth athletics to the pros. At its best, sport offers a chance for growth in virtue: moral virtue, but also the virtues of endurance, friendship, and honor. Sport thus offers an opportunity for the formation of the whole person, body, mind, and spirit. To that end, this certificate program emphasizes the formation of character in young athletes.

The University of Mary is dedicated to this vision for athletics, having instituted the “Greatness Through Virtue” initiative, which animates our intercollegiate (NCAA D-II) sports programs. In launching the initiative, the University’s President, Msgr. James P. Shea, said, “While the objective of the game is to win, the purpose of the game is to become what we are created to be.” Athletes and coaches at the University of Mary thus embody “the true purpose of sports: the cultivation of solid friendships and individual virtue.”

In this certificate program, you will catch this vision from our own coaches and Father Craig Vasek, Mary’s athletics chaplain, and learn from them how to form your young athletes in virtue and character through sport. You will explore the philosophy of sport, the vocation of the coach and the athlete, and the insights of athletic psychology, all within a Christian philosophical framework, as well as the navigation of the many practical matters coaches encounter in contemporary athletics. In short, you will learn how to shape your athletes not only into competitors fit for field and arena but also young men and women fully formed in virtue, fully alive.
